Notion Mail Is Closing: What to Save, and What MailVault Can Preserve

Notion Mail is shutting down on September 22, 2026. If you used it as your inbox, the important distinction is that your Gmail messages are not disappearing with the app — but some useful pieces lived only inside Notion Mail and need to be saved before the shutdown.

Notion’s official shutdown guide says September 21 is the last day to export or migrate anything you want to keep. That leaves a short window to separate what belongs to Gmail from what belonged to the Notion Mail experience.

What you need to save

Notion lists four categories of Mail-only data: drafts, scheduled emails, snippets, and auto-label instructions. Migrate drafts and scheduled emails to Gmail. Export snippets and auto-label instructions, including any attached files, so you can recreate those workflows elsewhere. Email reminders and the custom views that organized your inbox will not transfer automatically.

Your existing email history remains in Gmail because Notion Mail synchronized with it. Mail blocks already placed on Notion pages also remain, and Notion says Gmail-connected AI workflows will continue. The inbox application itself — web, desktop, and iOS — is the part that is going away.

Notion Mail solved an organization problem

The appeal was not just reading and sending messages. Notion Mail let you create views for different kinds of work, group and filter messages, apply properties, write auto-label instructions, and keep an inbox shaped around your own priorities. It made Gmail feel more like a workspace.

That is a real need. Email is both a communication channel and a record of decisions, receipts, contracts, and conversations. An inbox view can make that record easier to work with, but it is still a view over someone else’s server. When the client changes, the organization layer may be the first thing you lose.

Where MailVault overlaps

MailVault is built for a different part of the problem: keeping a durable copy of the mail itself. It connects to IMAP and OAuth accounts, including Gmail and Outlook, and archives every folder locally on your own disk.

A practical transition plan

Before September 22, open Notion Mail and move every draft and scheduled message to Gmail. Export snippets, auto-label instructions, and snippet attachments. Capture any custom views or reminder lists you will need to rebuild manually. Then verify that the important messages are present in Gmail — and create a second copy outside the provider.
