AI-Powered Email Cleanup

A local AI model classifies your emails and suggests what's safe to remove from the server. Everything runs on your machine. No email data ever leaves your device.

How It Works

1. Download the Model

Enable AI in Settings and download a model (~2-5 GB). It's stored locally in your app data folder. One-time download.

2. Automatic Classification

After each backup, the AI classifies your emails: newsletters, promotions, notifications, personal, work, and more.

3. Review & Clean Up

Review the cleanup report, approve bulk actions, and free up server storage. Local copies are always preserved.

100% Private. Zero Cloud.

Unlike cloud-based email tools, MailVault's AI runs entirely on your computer. The model processes your emails locally — nothing is sent to any server, API, or third-party service. Your emails are yours.

  • Model runs on your CPU/GPU — no internet needed for classification
  • No email content, metadata, or addresses leave your machine
  • Delete the model anytime to free disk space

System Requirements

RAM 16 GB recommended (8 GB minimum with smaller model)
Disk Space ~2-5 GB for the model file
GPU Optional — uses Metal on Apple Silicon, CPU elsewhere
Internet Only for initial model download

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI model does MailVault use?

MailVault downloads open-source models in GGUF format. The recommended model is Llama 3.1 8B (~4.6 GB), which offers the best balance of classification quality and speed. A smaller 3B model is available for machines with less RAM.

Can I use my own model?

Yes. Place any GGUF-format model file in the models directory (shown in Settings > AI & Cleanup) and it will appear in the model selector.

What happens when I "delete from server"?

The email is removed from your IMAP server (freeing server storage), but the local .eml copy in MailVault is always preserved. You can browse or restore any email from the Time Capsule feature at any time.

Does the AI learn from my corrections?

Yes. When you reclassify an email, MailVault records the correction. After enough corrections for the same pattern (like a specific sender domain), a local rule is auto-generated. These rules are applied before the AI, making classification faster and more accurate over time.

Can I share my learned rules?

Yes. Export your rules as an anonymized JSON file from Settings. The export contains only domain patterns and category mappings — no email addresses, names, or message content. Others can import your rules to benefit from your classification preferences.

Does this require a subscription?
